As we near the second weekend in May, us horseracing lovers begin to smell the roses, and the sunflowers and don’t forget the carnations. If you are a true horseracing enthusiast then you know that these flowers refer to the blankets of flowers given to the winners of the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. This sensational series of horseracing brings many bettors to the racebooks of both casino and online gambling sites.
To bet on horseracing you really need to be able to understand how the system works. When reading the odds, the first number is the amount that you would win. The second number is the amount that you have to bet in order to win the amount of the first number. For example, if the odds were 3-1 on a particular horse, you would win $3 for every $1 bet, assuming that the horse won. Payoffs are often based on a $2 wager. So, if you bet $2 on a horse that had 3-1 odds, you would $8. Horses that are favored will generally have the smaller payoffs and odds. If you were to place a $2 bet on a horse that had odds set at 99-1, then you would win $200. This is just a simple bet on horseracing. You would use these odds to place win, place or show bets, or in other words, 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd places. Yes, you can bet that you think a horse will place 3 rd.
Horseracing gets more complicated when you get into bids such as a trifecta. This is a bet that three horses will run 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd in that exact order. This can be a difficult bet to make, as it is very difficult to determine which horses will place where.
A quinella is a bet that two horses will run 1 st and 2 nd in one race in any order. This bet is a little easier to determine as you have two horses and they both could place 1 st or 2 nd, just as long as they make to those finishing slots.
An exacta is similar to the quinella, however, the horses that you pick must place 1 st or 2 nd in the order you pick them. This bet is a little tougher than the quinella because they have to be exact in order to win.
As you begin scooping out the favorites for the Triple Crown, keep in mind that out of 130 Kentucky Derbies, the favorite has been the winner in only 50 of them.
