Without discrediting the Australian, US and French Tennis Opens, Wimbledon does seem to hold a special place in everyone’s heart. Whether it’s the sweet, luring scent of the customary strawberries and cream, the tangy Pimms we are encouraged to drink even in midmorning or the tempestuous British weather, Wimbledon is the hallmark of tennis tournaments.
Hosting 128 players of the highest of quality, Wimbledon is the one Grand Slam most dream of winning. Known on the circuit as “Tennis’ most prestigious spectacle”, it really does epitomize everything the game stands for. Embodying the essence of what is perceived as traditional tennis, the game of yesteryear remains at the crux of the tournament. And what is more fitting chaps, than a good old wager?
The physical demands of grass-court play are like none of the other Grand Slams. Being the fastest of all surfaces, the competitors have to be eagle eyed and top of their game for every point.
But often the physical difficulties, teamed with the psychological anxieties the volatile British weather can create, prove too much for even the World’s greatest. But such obstacles can make the punting game even more lucrative.
Take the 2003 tournament. Lleyton Hewitt’s bid to defend his championship title was crushed when he was defeated in the first round by an unknown Croatian Ivo Karlovic. It was the first time in the men’s competition that a previous champion has failed to make it past the first stage.
Punters were also left revelling back in 1999 when the reigning Women’s singles champion Martina Hingus lined up against the 16 year old qualifier Jelena Dokic. Then ranked 129 in the world, Dokic played Hingus off the court, thrashing the number one 6-2, 6-0 and introducing a wave of new, young blood into the game.
The Wimbledon spectators are not unfamiliar to the scattering of seeds during the tournaments as year after year an upset hits the courts. According to the ATP’s own computer the biggest Wimbledon shock fell at the hands of British player Nick Brown.
Facing the renowned power serve of tenth seed Goran Ivanisevic, the high hopes of the Wimbledon crowd were not placed on this Brit boy. The nearing 30 year old had previously quit the game for 5 years and was currently two years into his comeback with nothing of note to his name.
But in the thrilling encounter, the then 591 st seed remained unfazed by the force of the Ivanisevic serve and defeated the Croatian star in four sets, much to the delight of the British fans and punters worldwide.
So perhaps this time round some unknown will find Roger Federer’s Achilles heel. Surely sometime he will meet his match.
