The Belmont is the third jewel of the Triple Crown and the most grueling for all 3 year olds in the race. The Belmont is a mile and a half race. Traditionally, Thoroughbred racehorses are not trained to run this distance, even if they are destined for the Triple Crown. Horseracing has very traditional training methods and they are not usually swayed from. This means that the Belmont is the first mile and a half race that any of these horses have ever run. This also means that you never know who is going to prove the stronger horse in the race.

Now, in 1973 a beautiful chestnut colt name Secretariat blew the world away. Whole businesses shut down for this race. Secretariat was a great horse and the world wanted to see him win. You must understand that Secretariat was not your usual racehorse. When horses were slowing down, Secretariat was getting faster. Secretariat won the Belmont with a margin of 31 lengths. He is the last horse to ever do this. Jockey Ron Turcotte was actually looking back and not even seeing the pack behind him as Secretariat went under the wire. This is something that we will most likely never seen in horseracing again as this horse was special. This is not a typical Belmont finish.

That being said if you are looking at the favorite to win the Belmont you might want to think again. This is one of the most difficult races to bet because you never know what the distance is going to do to these horses. For example, in 1998 Real Quiet had a chance to be the most recent Triple Crown winner, but in a photo finish, Victory Gallop had the race by a nose. When running in the Belmont it is critical that the horse’s winning speed is saved for the end of the race. Taking the lead to early is going to render the horse tired when the speed really counts.

When betting on the Belmont you are going to want to consider your long distance runners. Your front runners are going to wear out quickly and you are going to see the horses bred for long distance running coming up from the back of the pack. One thing you also want to consider is that a horse like Secretariat has a better chance of winning this race, as Secretariat was a crossbred colt of both sprinters and long distance runners. He had the speed for a sprint but the endurance of a long distance runner. Secretariat’s sire was Princequillo, who proved to be a great endurance runner. It is very important that you consider this history and study the pedigrees of those horses running in the Belmont. A horse that has a mix of sprinters and endurance is always a good choice, but then again it is the longest race that these horses have ever run.
