College Football Futures – Look Who’s Going to Win It All
The first official NCAA football polls will not be out until August, but U.S. sportsbooks are already taking wagers. In fact, the Las Vegas odds makers have already decided who is going be crowned the BCS Champion on January 9, 2012—at least on paper.
At opening odds of 3/1, Oklahoma is touted as the early favorite to win it all at the Louisiana Superdome. The Sooners finished up 12-2 and #6 in both the AP and USA Today polls last season after demolishing UConn in the Fiesta Bowl, 48-20.
The defending Big 12 Conference Champs may have lost some star power in running back DeMarco Murray, but they have plenty of offensive weapons returning. Headlining will be Landry Jones at quarterback, braced by wide receivers Ryan Broyles and Kenny Stills, plus running back Roy Finch.
The most highly regarded contender for the top spot is Alabama at 6/1 odds. The Crimson Tide wrapped up their 10-3 season last year by destroying Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl, 49-7. Gone will be 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, but look for Trent Richardson to fill his shoes at running back, just as A.J. McCarron will take the place of graduating Greg McElroy at QB.
Las Vegas bookmakers don’t believe any other teams are worthy of single-digit respect, but there are quite a few ready in the wings if the two frontrunners trip up. Last season’s #16 team, Florida State (10-4), has been tipped third at 10/1. The Seminoles are followed by Oregon, L.S.U. and Boise State, all listed at 12/1 odds. Then comes Florida in the lucky seven spot at 15/1.
Oddly enough, going undefeated last season doesn’t count for much in the eyes of the Vegas pundits. Both #1 Auburn and #2 T.C.U. have lost too many starters; they are being offered at 25/1 and 30/1, respectively. Better long-shot choices are the remaining picks among the projected top ten: Ohio State, Stanford and Texas, each available at 20/1.
Be sure to keep a close eye on the NCAA football odds at Sportsbook-Watch. There is still plenty of time to catch some great preliminary lines before the first pre-season polls are released in August, when everyone will be jumping on the betting bandwagon and the best deals will be gone.
