Tips On Playing 5-Card Stud

Wednesday - August 25, 2010 | Poker | comment balloon Comments (0)

Five card stud being one of first poker varieties has been around a long while and enjoys a rich history. It is still one of the more popular of the varieties of poker played today. Even within stud poker there are many varieties such as fixed limit, spread limit, no limit pot limit and yet other varieties containing a mixture of the above. On first look, the game seems simple enough, but winning strategies require one to endeavor to attain more depth of understanding of betting, positioning and the combination of cards that make a hand successful. The high earning stud poker players use a mix of strategies and calculate odds on every move, similar tactics of all the poker varieties.

While not reaching the level of popularity of Texas Hold’em, which is at the top of the popularity scale, 5-card stud nonetheless has gathered a substantial following in cash and tournament play. While not yet a prominent factor in major tournaments, you will find it popular among cash and traditional players and even in tournaments devoted exclusively to the game.

Five Card Stud Fundamentals

The game begins with a deal to each player of one card face down and one card face up. Some rules of some games may demand that the holder of the lowest visible card antes up (ties resolved by the size of the ante), followed by a betting round. After completion of this first round of bets, another card is dealt face up and he who has the highest up-card takes the first action. Another betting round ensues, and then another two rounds of cards are dealt The player with the highest scoring hand at the end of the game triumphs. All cards in each players hands are revealed at the end to determine the highest scoring, winning hand.

Ideal 5-Card Stud Strategies to Adopt

Because the game consists of only five cards in a hand, you can pretty much forget about drawing to straights and flushes. This fact may seem to make 5-card stud more straightforward than other poker types, but really all it means is that you need to concentrate on drawing to three of a kind, pairs, high cards or any combination thereof. It is a wise move to restrain your betting toward draw hands with their low odds, but you should bet with less constraint toward dual draws where the odds are far better to draw a straight or a different, stronger hand altogether.

The first rounds of the game will find most players betting towards pair hands, high cards or a mix of the two. Observe closely the hands of your fellow players and go for the pot only if you don’t draw an ace or a pair in your first three draws. Stud is a rather conservative game and does give you many chances to bluff, and revealing your bluffs can add to your ability to create even more effective semi-bluffs and/or aggressive strategies when you do draw into a strong hand.

There are many out there who play stud for its directness allowing them to readily pick up on tells and cues. Ergo, as a player you should carefully heed hands that your opponents fold on to pick up data on them for the upcoming rounds. As in all varieties of poker, observing and gaining insight into opponent’s moves can give you a major advantage.
