Different Kinds of Horse Race Events Each Have Their Own Excitement

Sunday - December 20, 2009 | horse racing | comment balloon Comments (0)

The television networks give the famous Triple Crown races (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes) such intensive coverage that you could almost get the impression that these are the only type of horse race events that really matter. But do some research on horse racing news websites and it doesn’t take long to discover that there are many other types of races. People have developed different kinds of races over the years that have then led to the development of different kinds of breeds that are suited to them.

Thoroughbred races are in the category of flat racing since they run on a flat oval track. Quarter horses also race on a flat track, but it is straight, and only a quarter mile long. These horses run at full speed through their race, contrasting with thoroughbreds which, although the fastest horses in the world, vary their speed during their longer races. Meanwhile, the harness race, with standard-bred horses pulling a cart and driver on a banked oval track, is another type of horse race that developed in the United States and was exported to the rest of the world.

Those are the varieties of horse race most prevalent in the U.S., and events in all three kinds can be found in various other countries also. But other kinds of horse races are even more popular in other parts of the world, with a few just starting to become popular here.

For starters, the Steeplechase, which is a race involving an obstacle course and a number of jumps the horse has to make, is very popular in Britain, though it is not found as often in America. In addition, Arabian racing is only starting to make its presence felt here, in new events intended to advance Arabian race horses.

Each kind of horse race is a work of art, worth watching for its own sake, and for the beauty and power of the horses. But as you get to know the various types of races, and the differences in the horses involved, it will also be tempting to explore the available horse racing tips to add another element to your enjoyment of these races; betting on your favorite horse and perhaps winning a little money. You can get involved in this aspect of the game or just enjoy getting to know the different types of horse races. There is room for every type of fan in the horse racing world.

Horse racing is an incredible sport. If you are really lucky you can find tickets to one of the bigger races held each year. The Kentucky Derby is well known for its horses and its formal ladies attire. But if you just cannot afford to attend the race track in person, you can still catch it online or at a local sports bar.
