Ten Pin Bowling
As an aside to my normal blog posts I thought I would write about a sport that few people bet on but many play!
Ten pin bowling is all about process and flow. Outcome comes later when you enjoy the winning. Ten pin bowling is an invention designed to get around a puritan prohibition. Skittles is a traditional game involving nine pins and a wooden ball. Ten pin bowling is loved all over the world and Japan is no exception to this. Japanese customers love to catch up with friends, play in teams and spend a few hours unwinding at this fun and enjoyable sport.
Balls used to be primarily lignum vitae, a very hard wood. But in 1905 the first rubber ball, the “Evertrue” was introduced, and in 1914 the Brunswick Corporation successfully promoted the Mineralite ball, touting its “mysterious rubber compound”. Balls may have high hook, medium hook, low hook, or no hook. However, be aware that bowling balls do not hook on their own; you make them do it. Balls can be made from a variety of hardwoods although Lignum Vitae is the traditional favourite. Many leagues these days insist upon heavy rubber balls.
