Seabiscuit - The legendary racehorse.

Seabiscuit surely didn’t understand the economic indicators of his day, and they surely didn’t affect his running or his winning. But they set the stage for millions of Americans to notice and to care about Seabiscuit as a symbol of unlikely triumph in the midst of so much despair. Seabiscuit does have one thing going for it, and that’s William H Macy as a garrulous radio commentator whose stock-in-trade is an almost Runyonesque hyperbole. Every time the camera cuts to him gabbling excitedly through his inane sports-spiel (”Who’s Seabiscuit gonna race next? Seabiscuit brings every evocative notion of the underdog out of the stable in turn but manages to make a movie with familiar themes seem as handsome as a thoroughbred, albeit one that has trouble in the homestretch.

Seabiscuit had captured the hearts of the fans, while War Admiral captured their betting money. Many predicted that the Admiral would run away with the race right off the starting line, as Biscuit was not known for his fast breaks. Seabiscuit was on the inside and still only barely ahead. Ligaroti drifted closer and closer toward Seabiscuit, until the two were virtually locked into a giant mass of horseflesh and humanity. Seabiscuit was a sly, self-indulgent beast, whose favorite activities had been, sensibly enough, sleeping and eating. Then, his trainer coaxed him into finally trying hard in a big race.

Seabiscuit was a runt of a racehorse, with crooked legs and a predisposition for indolence, but by 1938 Seabiscuit was making more news headlines than Hitler, Mussolini, or FDR. Seabiscuit is an average horse with a bad past that shocked the nation by having the heart to win. Toby Macguire plays Red, the rider who is too large to ride on a horse that was too small to win. Seabiscuit doesn’t get close, but then that’s largely because it is such a fantastic book. If you haven’t read it then you should, but to enhance your enjoyment of the film, watch that first.
